For “Fatal error: Failed to load il2cpp”, check Steam-installed files, security-software quarantine and the Microsoft x64 runtime. The v1.0.2 notes list these as troubleshooting, not a guaranteed fix for all startup problems.
First distinguish the symptom and protect your saves
This guide is for an explicit Failed to load il2cpp error. If the game only remains black without that message, use the black-screen guide: the developer still lists the long startup black screen as known in v1.0.2.
Close the game and make a separate save backup before troubleshooting. The steps below prioritize ordinary installation checks; they do not require a save editor, trainer or a replacement DLL download.
Verify the Steam installation
In your Steam Library, right-click The Piper of Dawn, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, let verification finish, then try a normal launch. Steam’s support page explains this check and its limits.
Record whether Steam replaces files and whether the same message returns. A repaired installation and a repaired save are not the same thing.
Inspect quarantine without disabling protection
The developer identifies il2cpp.dll and GameAssembly.dll as files that security software may quarantine. Look in Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history; also check a third-party antivirus log if you use one.
The official note suggests restoring trusted game files and adding an exclusion. Do not do that blindly: confirm the affected file belongs to the legitimate Steam installation and investigate the detection. Keep antivirus protection enabled, avoid broad exclusions, and ask the game developer or security vendor when the detection is unclear. Never restore files from a trainer or an unknown download just because the filename matches.
Use Microsoft’s runtime, not a DLL mirror
The game’s note calls for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 x64 Redistributable. Microsoft now documents the supported v14 package for newer Visual Studio releases as well. Follow Microsoft’s official download guidance and select the x64 application runtime recommended by the game developer. The label can change; do not chase a random older installer to match wording.
Download only from Microsoft and follow its installer prompts. This wiki neither distributes nor downloads executables on your behalf.
Still failing?
The developer also lists running the game executable as administrator. Treat that as an optional diagnostic for the verified Steam executable only, not a reason to grant elevated privileges to unrelated tools. On a managed computer, ask the administrator instead.
If the error persists, report the exact message, game version, whether verification restored files, any quarantine finding and the runtime you installed. Include the failed step rather than repeatedly changing several settings at once. A successful outcome is not guaranteed by these checks.
